ASH WEDNESDAY
From Pastor Jim Coston
I am a big proponent of the Church calendar. By Church calendar, I don’t mean the one included within this newsletter, though I am a fan of that one, too. I like the age-old arrangement of Christmas, Palm Sunday, and Easter, as well as other lesser-known observances during the year – including Pentecost, Epiphany, and Trinity Sunday. These special occasions flavor our worship and provide theological tuning to our lives as disciples.
One of these special occasions approaches. The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 5. Ash Wednesday initiates a season of preparation for pilgrims as Easter approaches. FBCScottsdale will observe this special day in the Sanctuary at 6:30 PM on that Wednesday.
During the service, believers will receive the imposition of the ashes, a sign of the cross made upon one’s forehead. The ashes come from palm branches from the preceding Palm Sunday. As recipients receive the ashes, a minister will say “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” This exercise reminds us of our mortality, sinfulness and need for Jesus. This mark will wash off obviously, but it is hoped that this understanding of our dependence upon God will not, especially during the season of Lent, leading us to Holy Week and ultimately to Easter Sunday.
Please make plans to join us at 6:30 PM in the Sanctuary on Wednesday, March 5, for our Ash Wednesday service and this important beginning of Lent.
